Detritivores

This piece was carved at Silent Valley Nature Reserve in Cwm, run by the Gwent Wildlife Trust, as part of their Woodland Festival in July 06.

The centipedes, earwig, beetle and woodlice were carved into the limbs of a fallen beech tree, brilliant invertebrate habitat . the carving reflecting this, depicting some of the creatures who live in and on it, slowly returning the tree to the earth.

  • Work begins on the fallen tree
  • The insects are rough carved into the tree
  • More roughwork, and the insects become more clear
  • The centipedes are finished and appear to be climbing up the tree stem
  • Another photo of the work begining on the carving
  • An earwig sits aloft on the end of the tree trunk
  • A small croud of local people gather around the artist, who happily explains the work
  • From behind the safety barrier, the artist can be seen using the chainsaw to form the desired carving
