Acorn Bench

This Bench is the first in a series of four pieces, carved in Cyfarthfa Park, Merthyr. Funded by Glamorgan Gates, with cooperation from Merthyr County Borough Council.

The Oak Leaf and three Acorns, were carved from an old Oak stump, in situ. Pictures show the work progressing, as well as the ongoing interpretation of the piece, and the finished bench after installation.

  • A massive but grotty section of a felled tree trunk
  • Dark brown acorn bench, with acorn leaf detailling on the top, and sitting atop some large acorns
  • Work being undertaken on the underside detailling of the bench, with the acorns being roughed out
  • The bench sitting on its side basking in the sun, waiting for a little more detail to be carved into leaf on top of it
  • The design of the bench, hand drawn onto a piece of a4 paper, it shows two views of the item
  • The final bench, sitting proudly at the side of the road
  • The bench being roughed out as a whole, before detail is applied
  • David Edwards of Pontypridd - the tree surgeon operating upon the acorn bench in full protective equipment
