Bugs

This piece was carved from half of an Oak tree (the tree had a weak fork, which failed in a storm, tearing the main stem in two. We were contracted to fell the remaining portion of the tree, clear and make the site safe. The other half of the stem was taken to Silent Valley Nature reserve, for another project), at Sirhowy Primary School, as part of a week of event organized in a half term by Tredegar Communities First.

  • The tree trunk post carving
  • Roughing out the sculpture with an audience agog
  • More detail being applied to parts of the sculpture
  • The final phase of the roughing out process is complete
  • Post sanding shot of the carving
  • The final skim over the detail with hand tools to bring up the detail of the insects
  • Almost done, the wings of an insect are the last details to be finished
  • The final carving, lais flat on the floor, with the majority of detail facing upwards
  • The finished carving in situ, planted in a grassy area
