Furniture Chainlink Bench

This piece was created from a single piece of Cedar. Another piece carved and located in Cyfarthfa Park, Merthyr Tydfil, as part of a project organised by Glamorgan Gates. This time reflecting some industrial heritage, of which Merthyr has a great deal. Cyfarthfa Park being the former garden of Iron Baron Richard Crawshay, his mansion over looks the lake, and beyond, to the long abandoned furnaces across the valley.

  • The felled tree, with the inital rough carving starting, mostly the trunk is untouched yet
  • The chain links are rough carved into the piece, and more detail is gradually added
  • The cahin links are rouch carved into the piece
  • Every pass with the chainsaw, more and more detail is built up, until the desired level of finish is achieved
  • The chain link bench sits unfinished aloft a mass of sawdust
  • After a quick pass with the sander, the sculptor is able to visualise more detailled work that needs to be added
  • A quick lap with the sanding tools, and the bench will be finished
  • The finished bench, on a cloudy day
